Dr Cynthia Maung has
been awarded the 2013 Sydney Peace Prize for her dedication to
multi-ethnic democracy, human rights and the dignity of the poor
and dispossed. Dr Maung has turned her refugee experience to
practical action by establishing health servics for the victims
of conflict..
An ethinic Karen, she
fled her native Burma during the pro-democracy uprising of 1988.
Dr Maung set up the Mae Toa Clinic in Mae Sot on the Thai-Burmese
border where 700 staff treat over 150,000 Burmese refugees, migrants
and orphans per year.
